Decontamination of Biofilters

Two projects involved the demolition and decontamination of biofilters in sewage treatment plant which were contaminated by liquid mercury. Mercury was used as a seal of the centerpiece arm in biofilters of this type constructed decades ago. The mercury leaked into the filter media within the plant and spread along the concrete floor and drainage channels. ENSAT recovered the liquid mercury with specialized HEPA vacuums, removed and tested all filter media, disposed of hazardous mercury impacted debris, and cleaned and decontaminated the remaining structure to prepare for future reconstruction.
